Introduction
Hi Makers, how are you doing today? I’m good. You let me know in the comment. we will learn about gears basics in this series.
So, Gears… “Gears are everywhere! Just look around your room or out your window—there’s probably at least one object powered by gears”.That’s why I think, as a maker its great to learn Gears.
With that set, I’ve created this Gear series. In this series, I’ll explain various types of gears and share all my gathered knowledge with you.
You may ask, “why Renderwrench?”. My simple answer : “why not?”. On addition its free. Free means its completely free, no fancy paid software, no paid plans. Just learning and implementation.
So lets overview content of this Renderwrench gear series.
Content list:
- Introduction to Gears — What are gears, their purpose, and where we find them in daily life.
- Basic Terminology of Gears — Module, pitch, addendum, dedendum, pressure angle, and more.
- Types of Gears (Overview) — Spur, Helical, Bevel, Worm, Rack & Pinion, and others.
- How Gears Transmit Motion & Power — Direction, speed ratio, torque basics.
- Gear Materials explained — Common materials and why selection matters.
- what is backlash in gears – Mini blog
- Manufacturing Methods — Common manufacturing process and why selection matters.
- Understanding Gear Ratios & Speed Relationships — Calculations with examples.
- Spur Gear Design in CAD (FreeCAD Tutorial) — Step-by-step modelling.
- Compound Gear Trains & Planetary Systems | part1 — When and why to use them.
- Planetary gear system vs Compound gear train | Part2 — When and Why to Use Them
- Worm Gear & Rack-and-Pinion Mechanisms — Application and CAD modelling.
- Cycloidal & Harmonic Drives — For robotics and precision motion.
- Efficiency, Wear, and Lubrication in Gear Systems — Improving performance and lifespan.
- Real-World Applications of Gears — In drones, robots, and machinery.
- Designing a Custom Gearbox (Mini Project) — Step-by-step concept to CAD.
- Simulating Gear Motion in FreeCAD or Blender — Basic motion visualization.
- Open-Source Gear Design Tools & Libraries — Free resources and how to use them.
- Troubleshooting Common Gear Design Errors — Lessons from real projects.
- Summary & What’s Next — Wrap-up and introduction to the next series (e.g., Rover Series).
So, now the Question is, “why follow this series?”
in this series I am going to explain gears basic to advance, with visual learning with diagrams and CAD. We’ll cover both practical applications and theoretical knowledge to help you truly understand gears.
On top of that, it’s completely free! This makes the Gear Series super useful for students, CAD learners, enthusiasts, and, yes… for everyone.
So with that’s it lets begin learning.Bookmark this page if you’re interested—this could become your ultimate gear tutorial!
